What is Record Crash?

The most thorough curator of web fiction that I’ve come across to date is Makin, who has done a large number of web fiction reviews and surveys right here on Substack. I would highly recommend as a reviewer; few can draw from the same breadth and depth of online experience.

—Synthesized Sunsets

perhaps the foremost authority on web fiction, in a just world where genuine scholarship was valued makin would be endowed chair at a prestigious university, instead he posts to an obscure substack

—suboptimalism

makin is a fiend. he is a horrible little goblin man and we keep him in a box to be taken out only when absolutely necessary, otherwise he runs rampant and bites people

—Drewbot AI model

makin is a hack fraud whose greatest skill is being undeservedly smug

—Some Guy Named Ricky

Record Crash is a blog written by me, Makin. Articles tend to range from reviews of web fiction to fan fiction to regular books and TV shows, to AI for some reason. The only things I’m probably never going to review are podcasts, the least efficient type of media ever invented.

How can I reach the writer?

I often hang out at the Homestuck Discord’s #only-the-right-shills channel or whatever it’s currently named, if you want to discuss weird fiction with me in a more live fashion. I’ve been told making a server exclusively for this blog would be “cringe”.

Do you have some sort of “best of” recommendations list?

I do! It’s hosted at https://recordcrash.com, The Shills List, the philosophy of which I explain here:

There’s also the less exclusive List of Reviews.

What’s the deal with the stars in monthly review posts?

Many people reasonably want to avoid reading the entirety of a—sometimes 10k words long—post just to find out which works I actually recommend, so I decided to put my recommendations at the top.

★ means I strongly recommend something to every person currently reading the article, while * means there’s a caveat, or the recommendation is only for specific types of people, i.e. read the review to find out.

I once had to put "(probably being sarcastic)" next to my name because people kept taking me seriously.
